Positano has a mild climate and scenic landscapes enhanced by the
typical number of steps that lead straight from the country's beaches.

Fornillo" which is within walking distance. While other beaches

| Positano - Places of interest,
history, myth and legend |
 The
historical events of Positano and its particular position on the
Sea in the Middle Ages led to the construction of several towers,
now commonly remembered as "Saracen Towers". Built just
for the sight of those times marauding Saracens at sea and guilty
of numerous incursions and raids against the population Coast. The
first tower stood (and still is present) just outside the town of
Positano, at Punta Campanella, there where it ends and begins the
Amalfi Coast and Sorrento Peninsula. The first tower, spotted the
enemies, they threw the first alarm signal with a cannon that alerted
the second tower, which then alerted the third and so on. The cannon
fire alarm across Positano and Amalfi Coast. The people then ran
to take refuge in the highest parts of the country (so the villages
of naccquero Montepertuso Nocelle). The Saracens all''addentrarsi
on the heights where it gave up waiting for insiedie and ambushes
by the local population. Positano is a magical place but also to
the ancient legend of the Virgin Mary. The legend says that in the
twelfth century d.cr. a ship carrying a picture of Our Lady was
going through the water just before Positano. The wind dropped and
the ship could not in any way to sail when sailors heard a voice
saying "Laying" from the painting of the Virgin Mary.
The sailors heard the invitation of Madona,, approached the shore
and "rested" under the delivery, the local population.
Since this event was named "Positano". The picture was
taken that day to be kept in the Church of St. Vitus, patron saint
of Positano. In the morning miraculously disappeared from the Church
and the picture was found on a tree near the sea. Everyone cried
at the miracle and Positano at that point decided to build a new
church dedicated to the Assumption (celebrated with all honor on
August 15 of each year). The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is now
one of the most beautiful in Italy. |
